Dr. Guillermina Kuan, M.D.
Dr. Guillermina Kuan, M.D. has been a critical collaborator of the Harris research group and member of the Nicaraguan study team since 2001. She is the Director of the Health Center Sócrates Flores Vivas, where the Pediatric Dengue Cohort Study is based in Managua, Nicaragua. Dr. Kuan serves as the clinical lead for our research activities in Nicaragua, directs the patient care of study participants for multiple longitudinal cohort studies, and coordinates site visits to participants’ homes. She has contributed substantially to many clinical and epidemiological studies, as well as to the development and implementation of health informatics solutions, both with the Harris research team and collaborating groups. Dr. Kuan is a general physician with a Master’s degree in Epidemiology
Dr. Ángel Balmaseda, M.D.
Dr. Ángel Balmaseda, M.D. has been an essential collaborator of the Harris research group for over 25 years. He leads the National Virology Laboratory in Managua, Nicaragua, and is the Director of the Nicaraguan Virology Program at the Sustainable Sciences Institute. In that role, Dr. Balmaseda provides the laboratory capacity and expertise to detect all viral agents circulating in Nicaragua. Dr. Balmaseda serves as the scientific lead of our laboratory-based and research activities in Nicaragua, ensuring a high degree of quality control for hundreds of thousands of well-preserved biological samples. He has developed multiple innovative serological, virological, and molecular assays to detect mosquito-transmitted and respiratory viruses, which have been implemented both nationally and internationally.
